I just caught something similar to this in a story on CTV Newsnet. I coulden't find the specific story, but found this instead.
The owner of the company, Jay Shafer, built his first little house in an effort to reduce the environmental impact of his accommodations. The building is less then 100sq feet. Since then he's grown his business with several other designs for similar structures. The site mentions that many of these houses end as studios. home offices, guest houses, or other out buildings... sort of defeating the sustainability aspect I thought, but others are lived in full time by their residents.
In the CTV story, the woman who lived in that tiny house had it powered by a solar panel and a propane tank for cooking. apparently, it cost her $6 to heat her home for the winter (in Olympia WA, I believe).
