Why has copyright become such an important issue to so many people?

Flickr, iPods, Youtube, DVDs, MP3 players - the way we use technology could be at risk.

Professor Sam Trosow, co-author of the newly released book, Canadian Copyright: A Citizen's Guide, will share his thought on the current state of Canadian copyright law, as well as the prospects for a new bill this year.

In December 2007 the government was set to table a new revision to the Copyright Act of Canada. But an unexpected tide of opposition to what was characterized as the Canadian Digital Millenium Copyright Act, including over 20,000 people signing on to a Facebook Group to oppose new legislation, has resulted in the government holding back on introducing the bill.  It is expected to be tabled in the new year after Parliament reconvenes in late January. While the government faces increasing pressure from the United States to rewrite copyright laws to favour the interests of copyright owners,  more and more users of information goods, (librarians, students, artists, teachers and researchers) are becoming concerned with the issue as well.

Samuel Trosow is an Associate Professor at the University of Western Ontario with a joint appointment in Faculty of Law and in the Faculty of Information and Media Studies. He is now as the visiting faculty-scholar in-residence with the Canadian Association of University Teachers in Ottawa. In addition, he is a member of the Copyright Working Groups of the Canadian Library Association and the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Science.  He is the co-author with Laura Murray of a new book Canadian Copyright: A Citizen's Guide.

THE END OF SUBURBIA

Free film screening

Since World War II North Americans have invested much of their newfound wealth in suburbia. It has promised a sense of space, affordability, family life and upward mobility. As the population of suburban sprawl has exploded in the past 50 years, so too has the suburban way of life become embedded in the American consciousness.

Suburbia, and all it promises, has become the American Dream.

But as we enter the 21st century, serious questions are beginning to emerge about the sustainability of this way of life. With brutal honesty and a touch of irony, The End of Suburbia explores the American Way of Life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era, as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply. World Oil Peak and the inevitable decline of fossil fuels are upon us now, some scientists and policy makers argue in this documentary.

Victoria Park - bandshell Description:

A number of local groups under the coordination of Standing Against Queer Discrimination (SAQD) and Students Opposed to Hatred On Campus (SOHOC) will be rallying to protest the latest homophobic policy, which bans gay men from donating organs. This policy, which transplant organizations agree lacks scientific rationale, will not only lead to further discrimination and stigmatizing of queer members of the community - it will also further increase the already long waiting times faced by those who desperately need new organs.

Both the NDP and Liberals have condemned this new policy as pure discrimination, and transplant groups across the country have called for a policy based on science, not stereotype. Join us as we march from Victoria Park to the Health Canada office at Richmond and York, where a number of speakers will join in calling on the government to immediately suspend this policy of discrimination and replace it with one which will save lives, rather than cost them.
