I am a member of the student body at UWO and creator of the Coalition to Peaceful Sotuions, a student organization that advocates for a peaceful solution to the Colombian conflict. Our group is concern ed with the current sociopolitical situation of Colombia, where (warmogering) president Uribe (supported by the Bush adminstraition) has polarised the country by encouraging the full elimination of the FARC guerrila movement, and delegitimizing the new politcal left centre political party. One has to understand that Colombia is a country that has not seen the light of peace since its independence from Spain, and as a consequence its population has grown in a cyclical violent society which turns to murder to solve conflicts. Location: Huron College, O'Neil-Ridley Hall, Student Activity Centre Description: Students Acting in Development film series launch: 'The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil' When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into atailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships andstruggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people.They share how they transitioned from highly mechanized agriculture tousing organic farming and urban gardens. It is an unusual look into the Cuban culture during this economic crisis. The film opens with a shorthistory of Peak Oil, a term for the time when world oil production willreach its all-time peak and begin to decline forever. The conference will revolve around anti-oppression issues and campaigns, especially those focused on worker's rights. We are planning on having a few different groups of workers at the conference. There will be some excellent skill building workshops, campaign strategy time, anti-oppression workshops and, most importantly, you all will get a chance to meet around 300 other student activists from throughout the US and Canada. Food and housing are taken care of, and we are hoping to have a lot of money for travel scholarships. In order to get a travel scholarship you have to register reasonably early (scholarship application deadline Jan. 1, forms will be sent to those who register and indicate the need for them) so folks should get that taken care of at www.studentsagainstsweatshops.org. | ||
