Consensus decision-making ?

A blog post about consensus decision-making -
http://mollymew.blogspot.com/2008/02/cats-meow-issues-surrounding-consensus.html
with a link to a web forum discussion about this.

Remarks from the blog post author -
The consensus model is "an open invitation for ... personal manipulation."  "It is also totally inappropriate where the issues being discussed are of any real importance and especially where there are real political differences that don't deserve to be argued into a false oblivion, only to resurface later (often at the very second when exhausted participants finally and mercifully exit the stage of the all too long meeting). In addition to this it gives huge power to salaried 'professional leftists' and those amongst us with no jobs nor family (and with exceedingly strong bladders ie coffee drinkers are penalized)."

whats this OFFLINE bizniss?

NOTICE of EVICTION plan ahead, and be safe!   The Londoncommons.net is about to undergo the long awaited upgrade to drupal 5.x (wait, whats this?)..  currently we use... blah blah blah..  okay okay, lamens terms....   we're getting a face lift, with the added bonus of new features.  some of those features will be chatrooms, audio playlists, photo albums, buddylists, and even a participation points.   what will happen is the site will have to come down for atleast a day, while we upgrade everything.  Your user accounts and all the content already on the site will remain.  You may not recognize the site when its back online, but its the same stuff, but better.  (just look for the logo! haha)   We've been working pretty hard over the past (year???) while on this, and have come to some nasty hurdles that needed that little extra to get over.  We would like to call this "londoncommons.net 2.0 beta" ..  read more »

Ambassador London: Tell Us What You Love About London

Ambassador London is currently engaging Londoners to brag about their city. One way we are doing this is creating a means by which Londoners can communicate virtually about their community.

The users of londoncommons.net clearly care deeply about London -- why not take a minute to visit the site and tell the world why you care so much about London?
Visit our site and post a story: www.ambassadorlondon.ca

I have already written a short story about the great forum that Londoncommons.net provides Londoners -- feel free to comment on the story and tell other Londoners about why you love to use this site.

New progressive event calendar

Hi everyone,

There now is a London area web calendar for progressive events at the new London Indymedia web site -
http://londonontario.indymedia.org

You can get to the listings for the current month through links off of the main page of the Indymedia web site,
or by going here: http://londonontario.indymedia.org/?q=event

Anyone can add event listings to the calendar -- with or without an account on the site.  Anyone also can post without entering a name, let alone a real one.
To add an event listing click "Post to the site" (near the top left) and then click "Event".

(That process is almost identical to posting events at the London Commons.  The setup of the two sites should be even more in synch in the near future; on the Indymedia site we'll probably be changing the way you enter the "Body" text.)

Any event postings that are ...
pro- environmentalism  and/or  pro- peace  and/or  pro- social justice  and/or  pro- genuine democracy
... should be appropriate,
though we may not accept event postings with strong ties to political parties.  The calendar also likely will be very local.

I mention what the editors will and won't "accept" because additions to the calendar will be reviewed by us after they're posted (though anyone on the site can view them in the meantime; they're not kept in a queue).  We may remove postings.  If anything is removed from the calendar it will be moved to the "Hidden posts" section, which you can get to through a link near the top left.  (Advertising spam is an exception -- we usually just delete that.)  Ideally we wouldn't hide any posts, but there is a broadly progressive mandate behind the web site that we work to uphold.  read more »

The spacebucks emails

We just had a glitch on the London Commons development server, and a whole lot of emails got sent to people with accounts here.   Sorry about that.

If you got any of those emails they can be safely ignored.  The glitch happened because we're working with a snapshot of the existing LondonCommons.net site to ensure that the new features planned will be compatible with existing content and accounts.  So don't worry, your email address hasn't been lost to spammers.

You can check the progress of the LC development site at lcdev.bootynaughts.com

don't rain on our parade.

October 27 Day of Action against Canada's military involvement in Afghanistan.

Well, it looks like this Saturday, there's a 70% chance it might just rain on our parade.

And the sad thing is, this will probably be enough to keep a large number of concerned citizens from taking a stand against what they believe is wrong.

Please, if you don't want to get wet, don't like the cold, and cherish your personal comfort more than the humanitarian rights of other human beings, then join the rest of Canada and stay at home. There might just be somthing on TV.  read more »

question

Just a question for anyone who can answer --

I'm new here and was checking out the FreeWiki page...I noticed it says the LC wants to offer the following services:

  • a computer recycling, fixng and teaching program
  • a bike recycling, fixing and teaching workers cooperative
  • an energy cooperative specialising in wind power, biodiesel or both

Just wondering whether any of these have gotten started up at all? if so, how successful have they been? If not, does anyone know where the funding for the site comes from?

Just my own curiosity here... thanks guys.  read more »

install Profiles

Hiya,

I am trying to get my head around drupal install profiles from the IWW. I am not having much luck. I am not a PHP coder or a database admin, I am having a hard time jumping into a field that seems to be only coders and admins allowed. If anyone would like to help me out, please feel free to email me at gwen@iww.org

I am really loving drupal and I think I will have a really useful profile for lots of left groups when this is one with.

joy,
Gwen
