Blocked Accounts

What is the call on the 'Unity Project' account? should it be allowed?

my opinion

I would personally rather not.

However.. we do also have a citylights bookshop account and a PIRG account (maybe others I can't remember), which are apparently ok, so by that standard then I suppose it is as well.

My concern lies in the representation of an organization.
I have a feeling that we might actually need board approval to have an 'account' that represents our organization, I'm not sure about the others.

i agree

I agree with this: the account for the Unity Project should be controlled by the board of directors because they're the ones who would be liable if the account were used to publish anything slanderous.

I would rather we limit account names to people's names.  People can still post for their organizations using their personal accounts.  And if an organization wants, they can request that we create a forum for them.

A little further down the line we'll have a feature called "organic groups" that will work kind of like purple circles.

So.....

Should we delete them?

Corporate Bot?

Who is Digger Jones anyway? I responded in favour of one of his posts on the "political economy" of Scandinavia and then began to ponder whether he is some sort of bot intent on distributing false and/or annoying information or, worse yet, someone who works for a corporation and collects the names and info of people posting "radical" material (read: reasonable, progressive or forward-thinking views). I know, I sound paranoid. But if you think all this sounds crazy or impossible, I encourage you to read the following article:

Chollet, Monica. "France's precarious graduates." Le Monde diplomatique. May 2006: 13. <http://mondediplo.com/2006/05/14graduates?var_recherche=France%27s%20precarious%20graduates>

Apparently this practice of corporations collecting information on potential job candidates from the internet is common in North America as well.

no bot y

no, digger was not a bot, just a man who didn't want to use his real name.

however.. whether or not he was collecting information for corporations.. I couldn't say..

Do we know he was not using his name.

Sure "Digger" is likely a nickname. "What do you want to call the baby?" "Let's call him Digger!" HaHaHa.

Jones is a perfectly reasonable surname. What if I wanted to post under "Charlie" or "Chuck?" Would that be allowed? Both of those are nicknames. I see "Mikes," "Kens," "Jeffs," and so on. Aren't these nicknames too? I miss Digger's posts. I found him to be an insightful monetary analyst and much of what he said made a great deal of sense.

Digger, if you are monitoring, could you P.M. me with your new on-line home? Thx.

Gravedigger Jones

It may be a refrence to the Chester Himes charecter Gravedigger Jones... any hoo, I was under the impression that the idenity of the account owner had been established, and "Digger" was not a nick name, nor was "Jones" their last name...

Of course, if people were allowed to post under a 'nome de plume', this woulden't really be an issue, and the issue of the "who's online" block could also be side-stepped. Perhaps, people would be emboldened to make more creative writing type  posts, or Chaos would ensue... Its a craps shoot.

Just wondering

Thanks,

I was not trying to sound critical, just wondering. I support entirely the proper names policy. I feel it helps keeps people civil. It is less likely that trolls will surface if we know who they are. I went over to the other site and Mr. Jones seems very reluctant to let people know who he is. Too bad. As I said, I felt his posts had worth.

Cheers

Charles

Digger

Since August, Digger (a pseudonym, rather than a nickname) has posted these:
http://londonontario.indymedia.org/newswire/display/66/index.php
http://londonontario.indymedia.org/newswire/display/65/index.php
http://londonontario.indymedia.org/newswire/display/54/index.php

He tells me that he'll post more articles to the London Indymedia newswire in the future.
