Front Page News!: Caledonia Wake-Up Call leader arrested

Flag of the Haudenosaunee

I looks Like Gary McHale finally got a taste of what he calls the "Two Tired Justice System".  Man, I wish I was there to get that picture...

Here's the story from CTV News.

For anyone not familiar with Gary McHale, he runs the Caledonia Wake-Up Call webpage, a site opposed to the ongoing reclamation of the contested reclamation site known as "Douglas Creek Estates" or "Kanenhstation". He organised the "March for Freedom" which occurred on October 15.

To Say I don't like him much would be an understatement...

The Reclamation of the site by members of the Six Nations and their supporters began in February of this year and has be ongoing for about ten months now.  The occupation gained national attention in April when the OPP raided the site and arrested a number of protesters, but were forced to abandon the site when protesters and residents of the nearby Six Nations of the Grand River reserves came in numbers and reoccupied the site... again.  Over the course of the spring and summer the site was a catalyst for confrontation between reclamation supporters, opponents and police. a lot of the tension seemed to be defused when the Provence bought out Henco Industries, who had planned to develop the site, and removed them and the aspect of trespassing from the reclamation.

It looks as if the reclamation will continue through the winter, and so will the need for supplies, food and winter clothing. it's usually very easy to drop supplies off at the site if you can get there.

Is there any interest in a drive for supplies for the site? If there is, I'll try to find an up-to-date list of supplies and post it here.  I'll be heading to St. Catharines on Boxing Day... So I could probably make I side trip to drop off supplies on the way there or the way back.

One Year On

On the first anniversary of an aboriginal occupation in Caledonia, Ont., Six Nations chiefs say they have proof the land belongs to them. At a press conference in nearby Oshweken today, the chiefs displayed government documents they say back up what they have been saying all along. They say the land in question was never surrendered to the Crown.

Chief Allen MacNaughton says that although it has been a trying year he believes they are on the threshold of a resolution.

Chief Leroy Hill says there's a lot of poverty and desperation in his community but the issue is not about a dollar figure, it's about how they're being treated.

Earlier in the day, about two dozen flag-waving Six Nations protesters marched on Highway 6 for about 10 minutes near the spot where the dispute over a housing development began one year ago.

the other arrest

Mark Vandermaas, of London, was also arrested with McHale. Vandermaas maintains the "Voice Of Canada Blog" which seems to be in-step with the opinions expressed by Caledonia Wake-Up Call.

Well, I certainly do not

Well, I certainly do not agree with anything this fellow has to say - I would say that based on the press coverage his arrest seemed rather superfluous.  It’s certainly “good optics” for the province, once again portrayed as the rational and fair minded interlocutor in the situation.

About time

This guy has gotten on so many people's nerves.... about time he got a slice of justice. I mean, he was the reason why all of us probably kept hearing about the occupation so much.

Maybe now we'll stop hearing about it everywhere.

I hope he gets some serious jailtime for all the crap he's pulled.

Do you support terrorism?

This Gary guy could not care less about who eventually becomes the owner of the disputed lands, he's only concerned that our government allows one particular culture to become involved in terrorist acts without being arrested.  Gary asking for equal rights for all Canadians is not asking too much I don't think.

Supporting Terrorism

Dear Confused,

French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre said colonialism equals genocide. A nation can not engage in colonizing without it having a genocidal impact on indigenous people - without it nullifying their culture, language, religion and way of life.
"Not one square inch of Canada exists in the absence of the appropriation of native land," Ward Churchill said. The land was taken, in some cases, through coercion and fraud. Has anything really changed in contemporary Canada?

Native people in this country are largely confined to reserves, with police services and the courts used to "keep them in their place," he said. The entire country used to belong to them, and under ongoing colonial measures, they are not given what they are entitled to.

Empire building was grounded in the belief the white Europeans were naturally entitled to own the lands and dominate the peoples they colonized. Canada was colonized by the British and the land's indigenous peoples were oppressed - treated as inferior and dehumanized.

Canada took its independence from Britain, but "there's been no decolonization of native people in Canada," Churchill said. White society, he said, remains rooted in "the natural ascension of white superiority."

A hero, to me, is someone who will take action, at their own detriment, for the weak against the powerful. That doesn't describe McHale in the least. I mean, who is really supporting terrorism here?

A hero

Mc Hale is a hero for standing up against a corrupt government.

It's about time this bastard was arrested.

Confused

Are you in agreement that the Aboriginal people were justified in burnind bridges, taking down hydro towers, blocking highways, trashing a residents home, etc.?
