Justin Cozens account restricted
Submitted by Jeremy McNaughton on April 13, 2007 - 3:33pm.
Hi,
After several reminders to keep it civil and not make personal attacks on the site, Justin Cozens just called somebody an idiot in this comment.
I spoke with two other moderators (Rachel Ayres and Kamilla Pietrzyk) and they agreed that Justin's account should be restricted. He will no longer be able to post new content, and any comments he posts will need to be approved by a moderator before they're seen by the public.
This restriction can only be removed by a consensus decision at a London Commons meeting.

free justin now!
I'm starting a new movement dedicated to freeing the creative and socially beneficial musings of one of our most beloved contributors. The moderators here are obviously jealous and perhaps unable to comprehend the MENSA level dialogue that comes with discussing the real issues with one of the great minds of our time.
Besides, we are just beginning to get a glimpse into the inner workings of half of the most popular and dynamic duo to post on this boring and dusty site. (Hard to believe that they haven't been paid for their services to this community.) Enquiring minds want to know the real Justin. How can we begin to strive to be more Justin-like? (Maybe an RSF workshop?)
So, I'm starting a petition for the moderators to admit their error, apologize, and try to learn from Justin in the future.
reminder
Anthony,
This kind of stuff doesn't really help with civility. Please stop picking on Justin.

P.S. I'm sorry I didn't catch this earlier.
??
I don't really understand why only Justin was restricted while Kevin's 'eating babies' was unnoticed. Maybe it's just a joke or expression that I have never heard of?
The straw
I believe Trev is correct here and I also agree with Jeremy's actions. Justin has been warned on numerous occassions to play respectfully. Calling someone an idiot is a direct personal attack which we do not allow on the site. He has been asked repeatedly to address peoples ideas and not act like a flamer. Flamming people creates a hostile environment and makes most users feel less welcome (or intimidated). Although I personally disagree with the ideas behind Kevin's comments he did not make a personal attack. He was posting a different look at the situation.
Jeff
i just typed a long reply
and received this message "Terminated request because of suspicious input data."
I may have used the word idiot a few times in this post, is the commons now screening comments and terminating them if words such as "idiot" appear in them?
I mean, I don't want to rock the civility boat!
suspicious
Hey Geoff,
no, the commons isn't screening posts for the word idiot..
I did check the logs about this 'suspicious input' message and I'm not sure why I bothered because I didn't understand a damn thing,
My best guess is that it looked like you may have had some links in your post, and maybe one of them wasn't linked properly?
There was also a lot of formatting code (I'm not sure if that's normal or not, you didn't cut and paste your message did you?)
Jeremy might have a better idea about it.
Sorry I couldn't provide more insight.

Maybe you copy and pasted
Maybe you copy and pasted from somewhere else? Sometimes it brings pieces of code along with it which the system rejects. Damn the system!
the straw that broke the camel's back...
I'm guessing its because Justin has been warned numerous times by the moderators to keep things civil. where as kevin hasn't.
.
[#londoncommonsnet] /me is 1337Thank you
Thank you for the quick response. I understand that it is an emotionally charged issue, and will endeavour to remain civil as well.
So, if I keep posting, does
So, if I keep posting, does it create a backlog for you mods to have to work through and approve? What are the criteria for approval? If I make hundreds and hundreds of acceptable posts a day, will one of you have to approve them all?
if we get to them
Sometimes I forget to check the approval queue for a few days, but so far it's mostly spam that collects in there. You're the first person to have their account restricted for being a nuisance. I'm not sure how often the other moderators check the queue.
Right now, approval of a comment is at a moderator's discretion and there is no real guideline. Seeing as how your account has been restricted because you're not able treat people with respect, that will probably be the measure we use. For example, if you call somebody an idiot, that comment won't get approved.
Jeremy
I had made sort of a
I had made sort of a conscious effort to stop posting on here, but I may have to start again, out of spite!
...no, it's still way too boring here.
shouldn't be much of a problem then
Since you weren't planning on posting here anyways, not being able to post without a moderator's approval shouldn't be too much of a problem then.
Also, I figured you would have something to say about this on your board and I was right. I would have responded there, but I didn't want to create an account because I probably wouldn't use it afterwards.
Anyways, contrary to your statement you're not "TOTALLY... BANNED", you just can't post new content, and your comments need to be approved.
And the reason I consulted with two other moderators is because when we gave moderators the ability to restrict accounts, we felt it should be a decision made by more than one person so that the power doesn't get abused.
My "narrow dogma" is pretty simple really: don't be a jerk on this site.
Jeremy
This is hilarious
I hope that figuring this out and implementing it took up a large chunk of time! Also did Kamilla get my PMs?
