you got legs? mmmmm... legs.

It is about time for another ROADKILL SERIES race. We're puttin' this out to everyone. We need yer input on the next race.

Some have suggested an 'urban track relay or time trial' -- ie. racing counter-clockwise in the SoHo ["South of Hortion"] area, around the VIC Tavern. Teams would be picked out of a 'hat' before the relay. Or, in the case of a time trial, racers would start staggered (30 seconds apart).

Others are wanting a get together in Queens Park [Old East Village] for a straight ahead 'match sprint' round robin -- ie. two racers go head to head down a straight distance. Top 4 sprinters after the round robin move onto the finals.

Also, we were thinking about August 3rd as the race date. Give us some feedback.

Thanks.

Problem with sprint...

I think something like a sprint race is a little too intimidating for the average rider.  I know I don't want to race anybody in a heads up sprint, because I will just lose quickly and that isn't fun.  It doesn't allow for a variety of bikes the way an alley cat does, and it's not nearly as laid back.

I do like the idea of a relay, but that would require a few more than 7 riders to work well.  I would suggest Harris park as part of a relay route, because the one hill would make for a really fun ride.

Either way, I'm sure we can work out something fun, we just need to guage interest.  Perhaps a pole question to see how many would attend each type of race?

I'm just saying is all..

jousting

Trev, are you suggesting paper mache jousting lances? Trashcan lid shields? I want human entrails for streamers! Wiki - jousting: Many bicycle gangs participate in jousting at the end of all day parties. [9] Two riders mount tall bikes and ride toward one another with a padded lance made of PVCresembling a giant Q-Tip.

Today, tent pegging is the only form of jousting officially recognized by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports. The sport involves using a lance or sword to strike and carry away a small wooden ground target. The name "tent pegging" is derived from the cavalry tactic of causing confusion in enemy camps by galloping though the camps and collapsing the tents by pulling up the tent peg anchors with well-placed lance tip strikes. The actual sport of tent pegging, however, originates in medieval India, when horse cavalrymen would try to incapacitate elephant cavalry by striking the elephants with lances on their extremely sensitive toenails[5].

Ring jousting is the official state sport of Maryland, and was the first official sport of any American state.[6]

The Italian town of Arezzo continues to hold an annual jousting tournament, which dates to the Crusades. Jousters aim for a square target attached to a wooden effigy of aSaracen king, whose opposite arm holds a cat-o-three-tails — three leather laces with a heavy wooden ball at the end of each lace. The riders strike the target with chalk-tipped lances and score points for accuracy, but must also dodge the cat-o-three-tails after they have struck the target.[7]

yeah

These ideas float. I think here it is also easier to develop a bit of a social audience than a sprawling alleycat race. What would be the route for the match sprint?  Friday evening might be good to get more people out, but Fridays also have more cars out. Aug 3 works well enough for me.

road frames

I have a couple road frames (both are old, but really decent), up for grabs.. and a bunch of 27" wheels.. I'm afraid of skinny wheels.. so they're of no use to me.. if anyone needs a race bike..

I'm moving soon, so I'd like them to go to a fellow rider rather than the curb..

I'm interested in 27"

I'm interested in 27" aluminum rims and tires, as well as front forks for same, ideally green. I figure I'll build up some of my heavier frames to give your brother a shot at beating me in a race.. Hit me back at zed9zero@gmail.com...

steels real!!

nah, these aren't aluminum rims, they're pretty old steel, with old junker hubs.  Also the forks on  them are threaded 1", and also heavy steal.

I also just want to get ride of them, and not worry about stripping the parts off them by demand  (or as they say "part them out") .. you can have the whole lot, which would make me smile.

you can have the wheels alone though.. 2 fronts and a back..

splelling 4 cyklists

Well you can keep your steel wheels, chuckles, I'm not looking for that much of a handicap! Jeremy and I will likely swing by sometime to have a look at your forks though and I can manage the 'parting out', even if that means stashing the remaining bike on someone elses curb. Why don't you build your darn bike already so you can race? Enough excuses!

jer's

I might just take em over to his place next time I'm over there.. gotta fix his laptop cable anyhow.. I'm in the process of moving, so I'm getting rid of whatever is taking up useless space.. so they'll probably end up in his pile of bikes...

as for my bike.. well its not easy getting 29er wheels.. in town every store told me they could get 2 tires for them.. 1 was 80bucks/tire, the other 100/tire.. plus I need a decent wheelset, and money..

my crank is the last thing to be arriving soon, but then I'll be ordering a disc ready wheelset, tubes, and tires, online from a place in the states.. they seem to be more widely availible down there, for a lot cheaper .. probably be mid august atleast.. falls the best time for trails anyhow..

..gonna be doing most of my racing on some singletrack though.. this road stuff ain't for me..
