Company now selling Linux Laptops (new) for $150. the trend is set! ITS A SCAM!!!!

EDIT - After a bit of research, a few people on engadget.com have discovered that its more and more looking like a scam.   their partner company, who was contacted about its legitimacy, claims to have never heard of Medison .. so there it is.. scammer are already taking aim at the linux crowd..

If you're interested in a cheap laptop, there's a non-profit group thats doing good things, and they are legit.  OLPC (one laptop per child).  I believe they have a program, that if you buy one from them, it'll pay for 2 laptops to children. (if that program is still up and running)..

***I hope people don't take this as advertising.  I'm not advertising.***

Just a few months ago, I wrote up a review of my new laptop, which is a system76, which is a company selling great computers with only linux availible as the operating system.  When I was looking around for a linux pre-installed, there werent that many choices.

Today I found this company that is now selling them for $150.  here's the link, so you can see the tech specs of it: http://www.medisoncelebrity.com/product.html

Sure they aren't sportin the newest 1337 Intel Santa Rosa's or LED backlighting, but for the price, it looks like you get a decent system.

I don't know if they're legit, but I found them through engadget.com, which is legit, and would say if it were a hoax...

I knew linux on computers would bring prices down.. but this is insane....

hahaha

so the company just released an update on the whole "scam"

basically says this: "we'll give you back your money in 3 months if the laptop never arrives" .. SKETCHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this post on engadget.com says it best: "Reasons not to trust this "company"

- They're a Swedish company without a Swedish address or phone number
- Their only address appears to be a residential mail drop in the UK,
shared with a number of companies that appear to be barely legitimate
- Their UK office doesn't have a phone number
- A Google search for "Medison" turns up nothing
- The laptop photo appears to be that of a different company's product.
- You can't build a laptop for $150. The LCD panel itself costs at least $70 in volume."

pretty much......

scam?

people should wait and see if anyone can conjur up one of these before actually ordering.  there's a lot of talk that it doesn't seem real.

if it is real, then it'd be even cheaper than the OLPC (one laptop per child), which is about $175US.

response

while Aaron sits in the virtual line-up to buy one of these things (yea, we're trying it..do a review up later if it gets ordered and shipped), I thought I'd post the response he just got from their sales. (took less than an hour to hear back too, not so bad)

"Thanks for your e-mail and your information about http://engadet.com.

Here's the answer to your question about being cost effective.

- Medison has a very, very small margin on each product.
- We want to sell huge quantities so that everyone can have a laptop
- Our organization is really small and therefore we have no costful burocracy
- Medison Celebrity is a low end basic model that comes only in one version and
all extra accessories ahs to be purchased through one of our partners or at a
local computer store
- Medison's business strategy is to become a big player on the laptop market.

Shipping to Canada will take around 4-6 weeks and the customers has to pay
UPS/FedEx when it is delivered from our logistic partner.

If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to contact us again.

Regards,
Medison Staff"

4-6 weeks is a long time to wait.. also the checkout process seems to be flooded, probably have a million hits right now.  and it keeps timing out.
