all you wiki-heads better watch out.. and read this:

Just saw this article posted on another forum.  A kid developed software to determine the IP addresses of people that make alterations to Wikipedia articles.  He found some rather shocking evidence of corporations and governments (or agents working within them, possible rogue, but its impossible to tell) going into wikipedia and editing content for disinformation.

Just a few snippets of the article's sited findings:

" Apple edit Microsoft entries, adding more negative comments about its rival,

Microsoft tried to cover up the XBOX 360 failure rate,

In the 9/11 Wikipedia article, the NRA added that “Iraq was involved in 9/11”,

MySpace removes paragraph when their website was hacked"

There are alot more listed in the article.  The evidence was submitted to various large corporations, governments and even the Vadican.

wiki-wiki-wiki

Another trend that was seen on Wikipedia was within biographical articels, where the subject would come and edit their own article...

One of the checks on this sort of edit on Wikipedia is the very thing that makes these sorts of edits possible, the open naature of the encylopedia. users who arn't there to spin an issue usually pick up on misleading or bias edits rather quickly through the 'recent changes' function, their watch lists or through just browsing articles and making edits as they go...

Spin a wikia

Spinning and dissemination of propaganda is a huge issue on both wiki pedia and mapia.

I see the CIA has been "editing" pages for years. Conservative strategists from SW Ontario have been editing pages of interests in the last few months in order to quell issues and potential scandal.

weird... I didn't think they needed to edit wiki when they had:

Wikia is worthless

Seems that if any one can go in and change things to their own liking, and not just the CIA or "conservatives" (I'm sure a number of socialist groups have also had their hand in making changes to their liking), then that makes the source worthless.  If people stop using the site then it will die on it's own.  I'll stay away from it.

wikipedia is still worth reading

I think Wikipedia and other wikis are still worth reading and contributing to.  Sure, they can easily be vandalized, but reversing the damage is even easier.  All wikis have the ability to revert revisions, usually with just one or two clicks.

MediaWiki (the software used by Wikipedia and the FreeWiki) will even allow you to ask for notifications when an article you've worked on is edited, so that you can revert vandalisms quickly.

Also worth noting is Wikipedia's commitment to references.  Most articles now have at least a few references that you can check out if you're doubting something.  Many articles have dozens of references.

And it's also just an encyclopedia.  I've always used encyclopedia's as a starting point for learning about something, or a quick reference.  But if I really want to learn about a topic I never rely solely on any encyclopedia.

If you ask me, Wikipedia is one of the modern wonders of the world.
