what is wrong with all you people?
I have read all of the posts and responses lately and I feel the need to ask people to stop shi&^ing on Jeremy. I am not sure how he will feel about this but this is how I feel. Not only do I feel that the attacks on him are overreactions but for christ sakes he started this website and he works on it everyday. Your forum for discussion would not exist if it wasn't for Jeremy, Trevor and others. In case you haven't got it yet, we are, all of us here, struggling with issues of civility and freedom of speech, this website was not set up for people to insult eachother. There are many issues to be worked on here. Jeremy believes in freedom of speech and has been very tolerant of people (as Trevor has also) who contribute what I consider negative comments and bad all around behaviour. Come out to a meeting and do something productive.
re: a comment in another thread
In another thread, Zach wrote this comment:
Zach: This has nothing to do with your opinions. If you were paying attention, you'd see that Sean H. also got a couple of warnings. This is about conduct. This is about being respectful, and not calling people names.
I know you're smart enough to do this.
I know you're also smart enough to know that I didn't threaten to ban you. The consequences of being rude and calling names on this site isn't banishment, it's restriction. Keep it up and your account will be restricted so that you cannot post without moderator approval. To be perfectly clear for you (since it seems necessary) you would still be able to post comments, but they would have to be approved by a moderator first. If your account is restricted this way, it would take a consensus decision at a London Commons meeting to have the restriction removed.
To recap: you're welcome to post your political opinions. Just stop insulting people.
Jeremy
mistake
Zach,
You're right. I was under the mistaken impression that Stephen had an account here.
I actually had mixed feelings about giving you a warning for calling Stephen an idiot. Not because he doesn't have an account here, but because of his public profile. He's now a figure in the media, and calling him an idiot isn't much different than calling any politician or political candidate an idiot. I issued the warning because of requests made by members of the community.
It was for that reason that I didn't restrict your account right away for this comment. You see, the reason I created a separate thread here was so discussion of your warning wouldn't take place inside the discussion about Maynard's office opening. Moderators are allowed to immediately restrict the account of somebody who's been warned if they respond to the warning inside that thread (and not inside the new one created by the moderator).
There's also the case that your flame war with Sean H. in the legalization of marijuana thread could easily have earned you more than one warning.
What I'd recommend is simply cooling it. Use the preview button and read your posts over before you submit them. Try to argue without insulting (anyone). It can be done, and I'm sure you can do it too.
And finally, you would never be banned. Your account would be restricted, which means your posts would go into a queue where they would have to be approved by a moderator before being visible to the public. I'm sure you don't want that, and I don't want that for you. So please, just try to be respectful here.

2nd warning Zachary Young
Zach got a 2nd warning for calling Stephen Maynard a pussy and a socialist idiot. See here.

For the record
Jeremy, for the record Sean H. started the insults
And even noted he could be banned. Once the sparks started to fly I wanted to see who would start the insulting ad hominem attacks. Though Zach should have had more sence to stay out of that line of argument (it's tough when people insult you), but there is no doubt that Sean decided to do the first volley with 3 insults in one post.
There definitely is a pattern amougts leftist people I, and others, have encountered during debates. Debates we had hoped would be rational with some ideas being shared (that is what socialism is supposed to be about is it not?). But what we get, because we disagree with your position, is ad hominen attacks. I've been the whipping boy of these attacks many times here and other fourms, and now too has Zach.
I do find it rather paradoxical that people of the left are for so free speach, so for human rights, so against racism, yet when it comes to people like Zach and myself, and others, who hold conservative views that somehow we are subhuman. If they were to do this to blacks, or orientials just because they are that race, they themselves would yell racism. Yet political racism is OK.
Zach is right. It is not possible to have a rational discussion/debate about subjects you people hold dear without your group throwing insults. I've seen this so many times before and the general meaning of ad hominen attacks is that you really cannot defend your own position. If you could you would not need to stoop so low.
The test of the integrity of those of you on the board of this forum will show if you do 2 things. 1) post this comment, and 2) unrestrict my account as it takes days for my comments to appear, comments that are very relevant.
BTW, we know there is no way of changing your views on these topics, but what we do expose to others who lurk and read them is what the left really is, which is not what you preach. It makes one very nervous as to what the left would do if they ever got in power to those who disagreed, or challenged them. We get the feeling that personal liberties would die under your communistic ruling.

thanks
Thanks for that feedback Richard. Sean was also warned.
I understand it's difficult to keep a cool head when insults are being tossed your way. Still, it's the internet and people don't have to respond right away. I say if you've gotten warnings about insults on a website, maybe it's time to do breathing exercises before responding.
Also, I know there's been lots of insults that have been missed by myself and the other moderators. The truth is, we need new moderators. Some of the current moderators don't want to do it anymore, and the ones that are still willing are not enough. If anyone is interested in becoming a moderator, please say something on the site and/or come to a meeting.

Modding
I'd be willing to give it a shot... I'm on here a lot anyway.

trying?
Zach,
I can't help but think that you're almost trying to get your account restricted. Is this some sort of scheme where you get more attention for your campaign because you've been censored by the evil lefties?
If it is, feel free to send reporters my way. I doubt they'll pick up on the story, but if they do I'll mince no words explaining why your account has been limited.
But it's pretty simple really. You can say almost anything you want here. We will only delete material for political reasons if it's hate propaganda (we have to, it's the law). All you've gotta do is act civil and treat people with respect, especially when you disagree with them.
I say especially when you disagree with them because it's especially difficult to be nice to people on the other side of a heated debate. But keep in mind that you're not going to convince many people while you're hurling insults around. And we don't like it when you do that, and we restrict your account.
