"Canada is the worst country in the world on climate change."
My sister just sent me this and I will urge folks to take thirty seconds and sign the petition. A friend of ours (word Brennan) is currently in Bali at this summit. He is one of twenty university students from Canada trying to properly represent Canadian public opinion on climate change. He was quite concerned about this anticipated problem before he left and clearly his fears have materialized.
Right now, a major UN summit in Bali has just a few days left to hammer out an agreement on stopping catastrophic climate change. But instead of helping out, Canada is actually sabotaging the talks! On Saturday, experts gave us the global "fossil" award for being the worst country in the world on climate change.
There's still a few days left to save Canada's reputation -- and the climate -- but we need a massive democratic roar to remind our Prime Minister what Canada is all about, and stop him from blocking the world at Bali. Click below to sign the petition, which will be advertized with the number of signatures in an ad campaign across Canada this week. The goal is to get 25,000 people to sign in the next 3 days -- before the ads run. After you sign, forward this email to all your friends and family right away:

Prime Minister Harper's short-sighted, undemocratic and big oil-driven policy on climate change is damaging the world and destroying our image as a good country. We're supposed to be the nice guys, who try to do the right thing in the world.
The vast majority of Canadians are hopping mad on this issue -- we can win this. We just need to show Harper how serious we are that he change course. Sign up now and forward this email to everyone you know - we've got just 3 days to hit 25,000 signatures!
Thanks for you help!

Apparent Victory at Bali?
From an e-mail I received from Avaaz:
Wow -
This morning, in a massive U-turn in the 11th hour of extended negotiations, the Harper government finally dropped its opposition to 2020 emissions targets among Kyoto countries , and a climate change agreement was reached in Bali!
Over 110,000 of us came together over the last 4 days and added our voices to a wave of popular outrage - we supported the ads that ran in Canadian papers and at the conference in Bali, called Harper and our MPs, and built the strength of the petitions, events, banners, and marches at the summit. And it all worked!
Click the link below to see a video message from Liberal leader Stephane Dion at Bali - Avaaz is a non-partisan group and the NDP and Green Party also deserve credit for opposing Harper, but Dion had an impassioned comment for us:

Lots of factors helped make this happen, especially a strong resolve and pressure from other countries. In teaming up with people around the globe to save our climate - including over 600,000 other Avaaz members who pushed their governments - we've defended Canada's proud tradition of doing the right thing in the world. The struggle is far from over, but this weekend is for celebrating!
With much joy and enormous respect for everyone who signed, forwarded, donated, called, lobbied and pitched in,
Ricken and the Avaaz team

The video is hilarious. As much as I would never vote Liberal, I'm beginning to think that Stephane Dion is the most progressive Liberal leader since Pierre Trudeau. He seems to have genuine convictions regarding climate change and poverty, among other issues.
great news!
I hope this petition really was part of the explanation for the "U-turn".
It appears that the Conservative party's environment minister, John Baird, is too cool for those 'boring' negotiations around climate-change. Honestly, why should other countries take this government seriously?
"Environmentalists from around the world were unimpressed. They awarded a "fossil of the day" prize to Mr. Baird for skipping the negotiating meeting. "Mr. Baird is apparently so busy at the climate-change negotiations that he has no time for climate-change negotiations," said Ben Wikler, spokesman for a coalition of more than 400 environmental groups from around the world."
"New Democrat MP Nathan Cullen said the episode showed a lack of leadership by Mr. Baird. "It totally contradicts Mr. Baird's claim that he cares about climate change. The Conservatives never wanted a deal here. I'm frustrated that this guy even pretends seriousness or concern.""
Baird a no-show at key negotiating session

Because Canadians are this
Because Canadians are this stupid...
BP Set To Commit ‘The Biggest Environmental Crime in History’
by Cahal MilmoBP, the British oil giant that pledged to move “Beyond Petroleum” by finding cleaner ways to produce fossil fuels, is being accused of abandoning its “green sheen” by investing nearly £1.5bn to extract oil from the Canadian wilderness using methods which environmentalists say are part of the “biggest global warming crime” in history.

Is Suzuki a neo-con? hehe.
I enjoyed Tony Burman's (CBC) article. The Suzuki article is embarassing. Brian Mulroney was not a "green" prime minister and efforts to rewrite history, especially by David himself, are unbelievable. Mulroney is responsible for NAFTA! (the worst environmental disaster in North American history) - enough said.
