Flock the USC

After trying (unsuccessfully) to vote in the University Student Council (USC) elections from this computer, and posting a comment under Kota's reply, I considered not moving out of this chair.

Ok, so feeling the need to be a responsible student, I sought out other voting options. I tried another computer in the library - "you are not enfranchised" (or something like that) was the result. So I went to the source, the University Community Centre. I figured I was in luck, there were two voting booths clearly marked. I sat down in the first one - which turned out to be completely offline. I snickered and muttered a suttle "figures". So I moved on to the second booth, which was... also completely offline.

So I'm thinking, an average student who really does not care about politics at all would have given up after the first few tries. A student who cares about the supposed 'democratic process' in the most well funded University Student Council in Canada (over 20 million dollars they are playing with up there) would have moved on to such voting booths in the hopes of success. they probably would have given up after both of them were found offline.

At this point, it was my bitterness that drove me to figure out how I could vote. I asked the only gaggle of students in the atrium if they knew what was going on. To which they replied, "I know, it seems like everyone is getting that message". Well, after another chuckle, I asked where I could find the manuel (good old fasioned ballot box system) voting station. To which they replied, "there are no manuel ballot boxes."

My freshly purchased cup of java was getting cold, my veggie pita was sogifying by the second and my patience nanometres thin - I asked the Lecce table to use one of their computers to try it one more time. It was rather amusing to notice, in the reflection of the laptop screen, the peering eyes over my shoulders to see who I would select to run this profit-motivated, hyper-capitalist enterprise.  What a joke! Finally I was able to vote, for Gauss with Lecce's computer no less, and I was able move away from the overwhelming stench of overpriced perfumes and, more importantly, away from the 90210 discussion about hair hightlights (I now know that Aveda is the only place you can find "truly proffesional work" in London).

What an absolute load of BS. I'm serious, this was a sad display of what we, as a student population, have become. The hierarchy is fully situated, the bureacracy inpenetrable and the profits keep flowing. Our student body is occupied with the perfect combination of artificial plummage to attract a one-nighter or, ultimately, to attract an Ivey grad with ambitions of unfettered accumulation of shinny things... I digress...

Apparently, UWO student politics are for the birds.

Good old Glenlivet, here I come.

Hey Neil,I might be wrong,

Hey Neil,

I might be wrong, but are you refering to those who had a problem voting as an elitist?

Could you be more specific in what you meant? I don't reallly understand what message you are trying to get across.

Thanks,

Kota

wow

I don't know what happened...

Well, it would still be great if you could have explained better,or indicate that you are being sarcastic, otherwise there is no way that I can tell, and it sounds kind of antaganstic. It's one of those problems in online communication you know?

Whaeves...I might have sounded cynical or dismissive, (it may sound cheesy) but student politics affects us all. I wish I could stay away from it and focus only on studying, but it's everywhere on campus, I'm tired pf easting poops and being exposed to this corporate oppotunitism, and this cultrue of apathy in general. Anyways, enoguh rant for tonight, time for some zzz...

Peace,

Kota

down with hypocricy

Well, I went to their website, and stumbled upon this on the front page

"The University Students' Council at The University of Western Ontario is the most comprehensive student government in Canada. As the leading undergraduate organization on campus, our focus is threefold: to facilitate social programming, provide political advocacy, and operate services that are assets to a student's daily needs. We strive to "enhance the educational experience and quality of life for all undergraduates at The University of Western Ontario."

Quite a claim I think.

I figure many people did not know their PIN number which we are supposed to retrieve through SIN (mine has expired in November) or OUAC reference number from ages ago. (Last week I was told by Gauss staff that what we need is our name on the student card and one of those password which consists of radom alphabet and characters) Having been prevented from participating, I was already disillusioned by the student politics without knowing the result. I mean, why can they just do it old school manual voting with our student number, C'MON NOW!

This message was sent out today, to all students, from the USC

Help Western win the $10,000 Student Union Bursary by having you and your friends take part in the Guinness World Record's Largest Pub Crawl - Canada Biggest Party. In 2007 London started planning to attempt the record, but it never went down. In 2008 we put London, and Canada in the history books.
This year we're attempting to take the World Record from London, UK. The event takes place on March 29 from 4:30pm-2:30am with 16,000 party animals and 4 cities participating: Ottawa, London, Halifax and St. John's. Post event all participants get a copy of the Official Guinness World Records Certificate emailed to them. Ticket sales end early on March 18th so get your ticket now before they're all gone.
Registration is now open and we are half sold-out for London as of Feb 20th which means the best pub crawl spots are getting snatched up by those who were smart enough to get tickets early. I'd recommend you get them direct from our website and receive the early bird discount and assure you and your friends are all on the same pub crawl team. Check out the pub crawl routes from the "View Crawls" menu on the website.
You can get early bird tickets online directly from
http://www.WorldsLargestPubCrawl.com/cart starting today until March 1st. If you go this route you avoid ticket vendor inside charges & fees. You can still get tickets through all Ticket Master locations, but they will cost more and they may not have any available.

Democratic student government or coporate patsies?

I mean, why bother sending instructions to the student body outlining what to do if you are unable to vote? That just seems like a waste of time compared to corporate pukefest 2008.
