Garfeild minus Garfield

"Who would have guessed that when you remove Garfield from the
Garfield comic strips, the result is an even better comic about
schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and the empty desperation of modern
life? Friends, meet Jon Arbuckle. Let’s laugh and learn with him on a
journey deep into the tortured mind of an isolated young everyman as he
fights a losing battle against loneliness in a quiet American suburb."

This is a very bizarre little comic strip I stumbled accross....it is essentially garfield comic strips that have garfield and every other character edited out, leaving Jon on his own.

The result is a little spooky, but really interesting.
Jon definitely does seem to be, as many articles claim, 'teetering between existential crisis and deep despair.'

The strip has been read by garfields original creator Jim Davis and he has been quoted as saying that he finds the strip "fascinating".

A quote from the New York Times Article:

"Mr. Davis, who has been drawing Garfield for 30 years, said that
“Garfield Minus Garfield” has actually prompted him to take a different
look at his own work. He compared Mr. Walsh’s efforts to the cerebral
approach of Pogo, the comic strip by Walt Kelly.

“I think it’s the body of work that makes me laugh — the more you read
of these strips, the funnier it gets,” Mr. Davis said. As for Garfield
himself, “this makes a compelling argument that maybe he doesn’t need
to be there. Less is more.”

The site has grown in popularity and recieves about 300,000 hits a day!!!

Definitely worth checking out.
I personally like it better with garfield, but that's only because I'm sensitive, and these are a little dark for my taste.
I feel like there might be a few people on the LC that would get a kick out of them though.

Know where your memes come from

I remember being absolutely outraged when this website started showing up on metacontent sites a few months ago.

Something Awful Forum Goons did this with garfield strips over five years ago. This guy is receiving accolades for plagiarizing other, better pardoists/appropriators. The same thing happened with LOLcats and that icanhascheezburger website.

The reason this happens is that those forum members aren't interested in creating comedy for the accolades or the money, like the creators of these websites are. They're purely interested in creating it for comedy's sake. It's a shame that the popularization of genuinely funny internet memes usually comes from people with ulterior, greedy motives.

Like with food, clothing, news and so many other things, it's important to understand where your memes come from, and be sure to consume and propagate responsibly.
