Dan H. civility warning.

This is a civility warning for Dan H. for his conduct in the post Revolutionary Hip-Hop.

Dan repeatedly posted off topic messages to the thread, and continued to post off topic messages after being reminded that hijacking a discussion is rude.

His language in this thread is also hostile:

Fuck Polite - it's useless in the face of ignorance. You can be confrontational without being hostile. Non-violent actions are not polite - they are planned disruptions of the norm. Are we activists here above what we dish out?

I hope this pisses many people off.

After a quick search around, I could not find any previous warnings for Dan H... there's a nagging in my memory that says there are previous warnings, but unless they can be found this is Dan's first.

I don't get it

'Personal attacks' are forbidden here on the London Commons (as I understand it), but there isn't a rule about hostility in general, is there? I think that the only writing from Dan quoted above that rightfully could be called hostile is the bit at the end, but how is that statement a violation of the rules here though?

I also have to ask:
Is there a rule against off-topic posts here? If there is, is it a rule about civility?
I think that the answer would be 'no' in both cases.

If relevant decisions about issues like those have at least been made at meetings I think that the people who use this site deserve an explanation. It's only fair to tell people what standards they are expected to meet, isn't it?

(I'm saying that even though I don't want to be part of a conflict here. I just feel a need to respond about this; the same goes for the comment that I'll be posting about the warning to Jeff.)

---

By the way, I happen to think that meandering conversations are often creative and interesting; a lot of different connections can be made and followed that way. And is it really worth clamping down on people just to keep them from straying from the topic of the first post?

Obviously those are questions that ultimately should be or should have been sorted out at London Commons meetings though.

policies and guidelines

I believe the 'Draft collected policies of LondonCommons.net' and the 'Working Policy Document on personal attacks and civility' were developed at, and/or endorsed at meetings. Hostility is more than covered.
Now if we could just get people to read them...

Ultimately, many of these are questions that have been sorted out at London Commons meetings... and through discussions on the site.

A topic of conversation naturally twisting and turning is one thing, but I think someone comes in out of left field and taking a thread off-topic with a subject not related to the discussion, it can very easily be construed as rude.

hypocritical

This is my first warning.

This is completely hypocritical but constant with your arbitrary inconsistency of applying rules here.

I will refrain from any further commenting on that post however my use of the language `fuck` and the entire sentence was not directed at any person and no less hostile than numerous posting on this site that have received no warning.

You are so wrong on your reading of the intent in that sentance Jer.

Sad

The argument that you have made here Jeremy is pathetic. In fact, it is a non argument. Explain yourself please. Let me emphasize that I am addressing your argument and not you personally. If this causes me to get another civility warning (which would be amusing because no rules have been broken), at least have the basic decency to keep it posted so people can read it and see what you are doing.
