FNB letter - sent out June 5th 2006

Hello fellow prospective and current members of

Food Not Bombs London.

My Name is lauren muffin and I have joined with a small collective of Londoners (Darren Lee, Kota Kimura and Alex Homanchuk) and we would like your help in organizing a bi-weekly food give-away in the downtown core. In order to accomplish this goal we will need tons of help from such a wonderful collection of human beings such as yourselves. To begin with those of you less familiar with the general mission statement presented by the FNB:

Mission Statement:

Food Not Bombs is not a charity. This energetic grassroots movement is active throughout the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Australia. Food Not Bombs is organizing for peace and an end to the occupations of Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine. For over 25 years the movement has worked to end hunger and has supported actions to stop the globalization of the economy, restrictions to the movements of people, end exploitation and the destruction of the earth.

The first group was formed in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1980 by anti-nuclear activists. Food Not Bombs is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to non-violent social change. Food Not Bombs has no formal leaders and strives to include everyone in its decision making process. Each group recovers food that would otherwise be thrown out and makes fresh hot vegetarian meals that are served in outside in public spaces to anyone without restriction. Each independent group also serves free vegetarian meals at protests and other events. (http://foodnotbombs.net/firstindex.html)

Lately in London:

FNB made an appearance at the People’s Alternative Lunch on May 24th to support and feed the demonstrators. This was a fantastic event against the current conservative agenda.

Volunteers:

Two types of support are needed at the present moment. We need you lovely people that are interested in giving some of your time and elbow grease to a cause you see as being worthy. For those of you that may lack the time other means of support are also greatly appreciated. For example the donation of non-perishable items (which are very rarely received by the beautiful establishments that donate with us) are a brilliant addition to any food give-away.

Pre-Existing Volunteers:

To those of you that were previously on the FNB mailing list I would be greatly interested in knowing if you: have any interest in being an ongoing participant, have any feedback based on your previous experiences with FNB London, have a liking for long romantic walks on the beach, and finally … have received an email you’re not interested in and would like to be removed from this mailing list.

The Next Step:

The plan is to have the next cook-out on June 15th 2006, and that means that we will be going out to pick-up donations that day, and will get together to make the delicious food (with an ounce of love in each cup.) The following day/evening (16th ) will be the food give-away. The more people we have out gathering attention, handing out progressive propaganda and helping to feed the hungry the better.

Interesting facts about food:

The world produces enough food to feed everyone, if distributed equally. There is an abundance of food. In fact, in this country, every day in every city, far more edible food is discarded than is needed to feed those who do not have enough to eat.

Consider this: Before food reaches your table, it is produced and handled by farmers, co-ops, manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, and retailers. Some perfectly edible food is discarded for a variety of business reasons at every step. In the average city, approximately 10% of all solid waste is food. This is an incredible total of 46 billion pounds nationally per year, or just under 200 pounds per person per year. Estimates indicate that only 4 billion pounds of food per year would be required to completely end hunger in America. Clearly there is an abundance of edible, recoverable food being thrown away. good good

i'll post it to the calendar once we figure out what time the cooking will occur thursday, and what time we will be out on friday -- then we can send out another email to those who responded on the mailing list. I can do this once we decide upon the time(s) ...

 *Edit* (addition)

the LAN mailing picked up the FNB mail, however i believe the reason that rich-text option was turned off was that it does not work on this list --- thefore sadly i shall turn rich-text off once again.

 cheers.
